Frequently Asked Questions

4 questions

What is senior move management and what does it include in Hawaiʻi?

Senior move management is a full-service approach to helping older adults transition from long-held homes to smaller residences, retirement communities, or care facilities. At Up & Downsizing in Honolulu, our services include space planning, patient sorting, white-glove packing, moving coordination, estate clearing, responsible donation/rehoming, and list-ready move-out cleaning.

How do I help my aging parents downsize their home on Oʻahu if I do not live on Oʻahu?

Up & Downsizing acts as your single on-island point of contact. We provide regular photo and video updates, manage move logistics, sort belongings with your parents at their pace, and coordinate responsible item rehoming so families living away have complete peace of mind.

What does Shūkatsu (終活) mean in relation to home downsizing?

Shūkatsu (終活) is a Japanese concept meaning "preparing for the future." In home care and downsizing, it represents the thoughtful, reverent practice of organizing belongings and affairs during major life transitions to relieve emotional burdens on loved ones and honor one’s life story.

Do you offer list-ready estate cleaning for real estate listings in Honolulu?

Yes. We partner with local realtors, estate attorneys, and property managers across Oʻahu to provide rapid, thorough, and reliable list-ready cleanings and home clearing that ensure properties are market-ready.

Downsizing & Decluttering FAQs

10 questions

Should I clean up or organize my home before you arrive?

Please don’t. Seeing your space in its natural state helps identify daily friction points, habits, and where current systems break down. Judgment is left at the door. Working with messy, lived-in reality yields the best long-term solutions.

Will you force me to throw away my belongings?

Never. You maintain complete control over what stays and what goes. The organizer’s role is to act as a neutral guide, asking constructive questions to help you clarify priorities without pressure or guilt.

Do I need to be present during every session?

Your presence is essential during the sorting and decision-making phase so choices align with your lifestyle. Once decisions are finalized, an organizer can work independently to design systems, assemble products, and execute the final setup.

How is downsizing different from standard decluttering?

Decluttering focuses on clearing out unused items to optimize your current living space. Downsizing requires auditing possessions against strict physical constraints, such as smaller floor plans, reduced storage, or major lifestyle changes, when transitioning to a new home.

What happens to the items I decide to discard?

Items don’t just get tossed. Our organizers typically manage logistics for donating usable goods to local charities, community centers, churches, and libraries. We do our best to find a new home for those items.

Do I need to buy storage containers or bins before we start?

No. Buying containers early often leads to wasted money on the wrong sizes. Sorting and paring down comes first; purchasing containment systems happens only after knowing exactly what needs to be stored and measuring the space.

How do we handle sentimental items and family heirlooms?

Sentimental items are saved for last, after building decision-making momentum on neutral categories like pantry goods or utility closets. Preserving memories is prioritized, often by curating display pieces, creating memory boxes, or digitizing keepsakes.

How long does a home organizing or downsizing project take?

Timelines depend on room size, volume of belongings, and how quickly decisions are made. A single closet or pantry typically takes three to four hours, whereas an entire home overhaul or downsizing project spans multiple sessions over several weeks.

How do we keep the space organized after the project is done?

Systems are custom-built around your existing habits rather than forcing unnatural routines. At the end of the project, simple maintenance guidelines and clear labeling ensure every household member can easily maintain order. We recommend regular visits with our cleaning team to keep the space consistently maintained long after the organizing project ends.

What is the difference between a professional organizer and a cleaning service?

Cleaning services focus on surface sanitation: dusting, mopping, scrubbing, and sweeping. Professional organizers focus on spatial strategy: purging excess, establishing functional systems, streamlining flow, and teaching sustainable habits.

Moving FAQs

4 questions

Do you handle both packing and the physical move itself?

Yes. Our team provides full-service packing, careful loading, transport, and unpacking at your new home, so you have one point of contact instead of separate packing and moving companies to coordinate.

Can you help with a long-distance or interisland move?

We coordinate move logistics for local Oʻahu relocations as well as moves to and from the neighbor islands and the mainland, managing the details so a family member overseeing the move from afar has complete peace of mind.

How far in advance should I schedule a move?

Because moving is often paired with sorting and downsizing, we recommend scheduling a consultation four to six weeks before your target move date, though we also accommodate shorter timelines when needed.

What happens to furniture or boxes that don’t fit in the new home?

Anything that doesn’t make the move is sorted for donation, responsible disposal, or consignment, the same care we apply to every item during a downsizing project.

House Cleaning FAQs

8 questions

How much does house cleaning cost?

Pricing depends on the size of your home and the level of care it needs, so it varies from client to client. If you can send us a few photos, we’re glad to offer a rough estimate to start. For the most accurate number, we recommend a free in-home visit, where we can see the space and tailor a plan to fit it exactly.

Do you offer regular house cleaning, like weekly or monthly visits?

Yes. Many of our clients choose an ongoing rhythm, weekly, biweekly, or monthly, so their home stays consistently cared for without them having to think about it. We’ll help you find the schedule that fits your life.

Which areas of the island do you serve for house cleaning?

We currently provide house cleaning in Honolulu’s town area, Hawaiʻi Kai, and Kailua. If you’re nearby and not sure whether we reach your neighborhood, just ask; we’re happy to check.

What payment methods do you accept?

Whatever is easiest for you. We accept cash, check, credit card, ACH bank transfer, Venmo, PayPal, and Apple Pay. A small processing fee may apply to certain card payments.

Do I need to be home while you clean?

Not necessarily. Many clients provide access instructions and go about their day while we work; others prefer to be there, especially for a first visit. Whatever makes you comfortable is the right choice.

Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and equipment?

Yes. Our team arrives fully equipped, so there’s nothing for you to buy or set out beforehand. If you’d like us to use specific products, for a sensitivity or a surface that needs special care, just let us know and we’ll accommodate it.

Are your cleaners insured and background-checked?

Yes. Every member of our team is vetted, insured, and trained to treat your home and your belongings with care. Trust isn’t an afterthought for us; it’s the foundation of the work.

Is there a minimum commitment or long-term contract?

No long-term contract is required. You can book a one-time cleaning or set up recurring visits, and adjust the schedule as your needs change.
